What are Antioxidants? Benefits of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.  Health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer etc are all contributed by oxidative damage. Indeed, a recent study conducted by researchers from London found that 5 servings of fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of stroke by 25 percent. Antioxidants may also enhance immune defense and therefore lower the risk of cancer and infection.

Message: Antioxidants are found abundant in beans, grain products, fruits and vegetables. Look for fruits with bright color - lutein in some of the yellow pigments found in corn; orange in cantaloupe, butternut squash and mango; red from lycopene in tomatoes and watermelon, and purple and blue in berries. So enjoy eating a variety of these products. It is best to obtain these antioxidants from foods instead of supplements. In addition, minimize the exposure of oxidative stress such as smoking and sunburn.

Recently Nestle and Nescafe have launched a marketing campaign that states coffee is packed full of antioxidants.

This is completely untrue! The process coffee beans go through to become a beverage destroys these nutrients.

The coffee BERRY contains the antioxidants.

The whole coffee fruit also contains many healthy poly-, oligo- (and five of the eight essential mono-)saccharides.
Polysaccharides, such as mannans and aribinogalactans, make up nearly 50% of the coffee berry.
Conventional roasting destroys these nutrients, so they're not found in traditional coffee.

This is yet another example of the lengths marketing morons will go to to sell their product to unsuspecting consumers.
Upon enquiring about where they got their facts from, Nestle were unable, or unwilling, to provide scientific evidence to show that they had found their coffee products to contain antioxidants.

Reducing, or better still - removing, coffee from your diet is highly important. Your liver has to work incredibly hard to combat the side effects produced from drinking coffee, which include hyper activity, lack of concentration, heart palpitations, dizziness, the shakes, headaches (caused by dehydration) and more.

Caffeine is also a diuretic - basically, it makes you pee.

A lot of people report the same symptoms when ingesting Guarana or Ginseng but this is not cooked. It is better to buy your supplements cold processed. This way they have not been heated and will retain all their nutrients and beneficial properties.

Shouldn't GMO Food Be Labeled

What's a GMO?

A GMO (genetically modified organism), also know as a GE (genetically engineered) or transgenic organism, is created by scientists in a laboratory where they insert genes into an organism to create new traits. In the United States, GMOs are not labeled. They are in over 75% of processed supermarket foods in ingredients like soy lecithin, canola, corn syrup, and cotton seed oil.


  • Genetic engineering is completely different from traditional breeding. In traditional breeding it is possible to mate a pig with another pig to get a new variety, but is not possible to mate a pig with a potato or a mouse. Even when species that may seem to be closely related do succeed in breeding, the offspring are usually infertile—a horse, for example, can mate with a donkey, but the offspring (a mule) is sterile.
  • With genetic engineering, scientists can breach species barriers set up by nature. For example, they have spliced fish genes into tomatoes.
  • Other examples of genetic engineering experiments that have already been done include:
  • Spider/Goat – taking a gene from a spider that leads to the production of spider web and putting it into goats so the goats can then be milked for the spider web protein.
  • Fish/Strawberries – taking a gene from an Arctic flounder and putting it into a strawberry to try to make it frost-resistant.
  • Corn/Human – taking a human gene and putting it into corn so that the corn contains human antibodies that attack sperm. The idea is to develop the corn as a plant-gel contraceptive that kills sperm on contact.

GMOs grown in Hawaii?

Hawaii has more experimental field trials of genetic engineering than any other state in the nation. Just a few of the many examples of permits granted for field trials include:

    • Corn engineered with human genes (Dow)
    • Sugarcane engineered with human genes (Hawai‘i Agriculture Research Center)
    • Corn engineered with jellyfish genes (Stanford University)
    • Tobacco engineered with lettuce genes (University of Hawai‘i)
    • Rice engineered with human genes (Applied Phytologics)
    • Corn engineered with hepatitis virus genes (Prodigene)1

    What is a gene?

    Every plant and animal is made of cells, each of which has a center called a nucleus. Inside every nucleus there are strings of DNA, half of which is normally inherited from the mother and half from the father. Short sequences of DNA are called genes. These genes operate in complex networks that are finely regulated to enable the processes of living organisms to happen in the right place and at the right time.

    How is genetic engineering done?

    Because living organisms have natural barriers to protect themselves against the introduction of DNA from a different species, genetic engineers have to find ways to force the DNA from one organism into another. These methods include:

    • Using viruses or bacteria to "infect" animal or plant cells with the new DNA.
    • Using electric shocks to create holes in the membrane covering sperm, and then forcing the new DNA into the sperm through these holes.
    • Injecting the new DNA into fertilized eggs with a very fine needle.
    • Coating DNA onto tiny metal pellets, and firing it with a special

    Is genetic engineering precise?

    The technology of genetic engineering is currently very crude. It is not possible to insert a new gene with any accuracy, and the transfer of new genes can disrupt the finely controlled network of DNA in an organism.

    Current understanding of the way in which DNA works is extremely limited, and any change to the DNA of an organism at any point can have side effects that are impossible to predict or control. The new gene could, for example, alter chemical reactions within the cell or disturb cell functions. This could lead to instability, the creation of new toxins or allergens, and changes in nutritional value.

    For example, when genetically engineered salmon were compared to normal salmon, it was found that the genetic engineering unexpectedly increased the amount of a protein identified as a major food allergen. In another case, Australian researchers reported in November 2005 that after 10 years spent developing a genetically engineered pea they had to abandon project after they found out that the altered peas caused lung inflammation and other adverse effects in mice. "The reaction of the mice…might reflect something that would happen to humans," said deputy chief of CSIRO plant industry T. J. Higgins.

    This last paragraph is the most disturbing in my opinion. This entire process of altering the natural order of something as fundamental as food seems borderline deadly.

    Why do genetically engineered foods have antibiotic resistant genes in them?

    The techniques used to transfer genes have a very low success rate, so the genetic engineers attach "marker genes" that are resistant to antibiotics to help them to find out which cells have taken up the new DNA. These marker genes are resistant to antibiotics that are commonly used in human and veterinary medicine. Some scientists believe that eating GE food containing these marker genes could encourage gut bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance.

    Mildly Green

    Hello,
    my name's Graham, like the cracker.
    I've been mildly green for quite a few years now. It seems strange to me when people refer to organics as a "movement" as though it is a new type of product.
    I've been a member of a farm coop for a while, but it's nice to see the addition of some organic products in the local supermarket.
    I grow my own squash, cucumbers, radish, and tomatoes in the summer.
    The bigger changes I made this year was quitting my job and getting into selling organic products online.
    I threw all my cleaning products in the trash along with antiperspirants, toothpaste, shaving cream etc.. i have one cleaning product (organic) that does the job of all the others.
    My shaving cream is 70% organic and it's mostly just aloe, wow, a little goes a long way. It's the same with the deodorant, 100% organic, lasts a long time as well.
    Anyway, until this past year, I really wasn't aware of the toxins present, not only in cleaning products, but in everything you use on a daily basis, things you put in your mouth, on skin, your hair.

    It's amazing to me the chemicals present (carcinogenic) in almost everything. Over time, it has to take it's toll. I noticed on the back of a can of antiperspirant, it stated: breathing of contents may be harmful or fatal. It states the same on the back of room air freshener! How insane is that?

    People put way too much faith in the FDA, and all the other federal agencies as well, I mean they're the ones that approve all these products/poisons for our consumption right?

    I've never felt better and been happier about a decision than the one I made last year. This group needs to get much bigger.

    SURFACTANTS

    Do you know what this word means? You've probably seen it listed on some of your skin-care products, most all shampoos, anything that foams.
    SURFaceACtiveagENTS are substances capable of dissolving oils and holding dirt in suspension so it can be rinsed away with water. They are used in skin cleansers and shampoos.

    A serious problem with ethoxylated surfactants (those that utilize ethylene or propylene oxide in the chemical reaction) is that they can be contaminated with dioxane, a potent carcinogen.

    These surfactants are listed on labels as ingredients ending with-eth, (like laureth) or containing the phrase: PEG (PolyEthyleneGlycol) or PPG (PolyPropyleneGlycol).
    I mean come on people! This stuff is used in car-washes and on factory floors! You're going to put it on your face, and wash your hair with it?

    Another dangerous class of surfactants are amides. These are listed are listed on labels containing TEA- TriEthynolAmine, DEA- DiEthanolAmine and, MEA MonoEthanolAmine. All compounds containing TEA, DEA, and MEA can undergo nitrosation with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic (cancerous), how often do you wash your hair and clean your face? Do you think Proctor and Gamble will tell you about this? Or, do you feel that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will watch over you? Not when billions of dollars are at stake.

    One study has found that over 40% of products containing Triethanolamine (TEA) were contaminated with these potent carcinogens.
    Go get some of your products that you and your family use and read the labels!  

    Do you think that the 18.4 % Aluminum Chlorohydrate in one can of Anti-perspirant might contribute to breast cancer, or cancer of the lymph system? Your lymph glands are under your arms. Did you know that on the label of this anti-perspirant  it states: Breathing of propellant can be harmful, or fatal! Ask your doctor if you have kidney disease before using this product! How can you NOT breath this product, using it every day? This is on the back of a can of: Arrid XX Ultra Clear, Ultra Fresh. Check it out, don't take my word for it, and the kicker is that we pay almost $5-6 dollars a can for the poison.

    Will Change Happen?







    Hello, and welcome to the Organic Mechanic's blog. I wonder if change will really come about during the current run to the presidential elections. Or, will we languish in the mire that has plagued this once great nation for the last eight years? I say, "last eight years," because it's just gotten worse in that time. We've been lied to for a long time by this, and all the other preceding, elected, politicians and their internal agencies. The CDC, IRS, FDA, CIA, etc.. just to name a few.
    Just take a walk through your local supermarket and look at the garbage that passes for food. The poison the FDA allows you to consume because of the lobbyists in Washington. Take a look at the label on the can of that Diet Coke you're drinking. Look for a little word that reads: Aspartame, it causes brain tumors and diabetes, it leaves residue in your body, that residue is called: Formaldehyde. Aspartame should never have been allowed to hit the market, but there was too much money to be made. Aspartame is in hundreds of fruit juices, chewing gum, Equal, Splenda, your kid's fruit roll-ups.
    Look at the TV commercials that air 24/7. They don't have to sell them to you, you're already sold. You just go to your doctor and ask him for them. He gives you free samples, and the drug companies send he and his wife on luxurious vacations, while the "domino effect" takes place within your body. Something else goes wrong and they prescribe another drug for that, then your kidneys act up...etc.
    My mom went into the hospital in May of 2007. She was diagnosed with colon cancer. They operated and removed the tumor. She was eighty-years-old, she looked radiant after the operation, and she was so excited to have a new chance. She went home and got better. My parents lived in Florida on a beautiful island called: Marco, in southwest Florida. My dad took my mother down to the beach every night to watch the sunset as she became stronger. Six weeks after her operation, she went back in to receive a checkup. In mid-June, the doctor was so pleased that she felt it was time to start my mom on Chemotherapy. My parents went home that night and discussed it. My mom said she was ready, and she began the first stage of an oral form of chemo. She progressed, and the doctor was again pleased enough to start her on the purest, most potent form of administering this drug. Toward the end of July, she was attached to a drip tube for three hours. My father picked her up after her first treatment and brought her home.
    The doctor prescribed some pills for possible side effects. They went to the beach that night and watched the sunset.
    A few days went by and my mom contracted diarrhea, she couldn't eat or drink anything. My dad went online and found that diarrhea was a major symptom of the chemotherapy. No one, including the doctor had told him what to possibly expect. the next day, my mom collapsed on the living-room floor. My dad called 9-1-1 and they rushed her to the hospital. They put her on an I.V. for a few days, then moved her to an off-site care center. She worsened, toward the end of August. She sounded so weak and disheartened, nothing like the optimist she was. By the end of the day on September 6th. 2007, my wonderful mother succumbed to complications due to chemotherapy.
    My dad was devastated. After fifty-one-years of marriage, "she was suddenly just gone" as he put it.
    Later, we found out, the very same doctor that had prescribed my mom's cancer treatment had run a patient profile before her operation. The profile had stated that someone her age should never have been given chemotherapy because the risks were far too great. The health insurance provider was billed eight-thousand-dollars for the three-hour treatment that killed my mom.
    My dad said there must have been twenty patients there that day, receiving the chemo-drip in rows of chairs lining the wall.

    Healthcare in this country is a business. You aren't a patient, you're a customer. It's just too bad my mom couldn't get a refund for something she never needed in the first place.
